Vasa Pelagic's Life and Achievements

Vasa Pelagic was born on December 29, 1833 in Bajina Basta, a town in western Serbia. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and became a doctor in 1858. He was also involved in the Serbian national movement and participated in several uprisings against the Ottoman Empire. He was arrested and exiled several times for his political activities.

In 1868, he moved to Belgrade and became a professor of natural sciences at the Velika skola (Great School), the predecessor of the University of Belgrade. He also founded a progressive journal called Sloboda (Freedom), which advocated for social justice, democracy, and education. He was one of the leaders of the Radical Party, which opposed the authoritarian rule of Prince Milan Obrenovic.

In 1878, he was elected to the National Assembly and became one of the main proponents of the Timok Rebellion, a peasant uprising against the government's taxation policies. He was arrested again and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. He spent the next seven years in various prisons and fortresses in Austria-Hungary.

In 1885, he was released from prison and went into exile in Switzerland, where he wrote his most famous book Narodni Ucitelj. He also traveled to Russia, France, Italy, and Bulgaria, where he continued his political and educational activities. He returned to Serbia in 1890 and resumed his teaching career at the Velika skola. He died on January 29, 1899 in Belgrade.

Narodni Ucitelj: A Guide for Self-Education and Social Reform

Narodni Ucitelj (People's Teacher) was first published in 1879 and had four editions until 1894. It was one of the most widely read books in Serbia and other Balkan countries at that time. It had a circulation of 18,000 copies, while all his other books and booklets reached a circulation of 212,000 before his death.

The book is divided into four parts:

  • The first part deals with natural sciences, such as astronomy, geography, geology, biology, chemistry, physics, and medicine.

  • The second part covers social sciences, such as history, sociology, economics, politics, law, and ethics.

  • The third part focuses on practical skills, such as agriculture, crafts, trade, hygiene, health, and physical education.

  • The fourth part contains various literary works, such as poems, stories, proverbs, riddles, jokes, and puzzles.

The book is written in a simple and accessible language, with many examples, illustrations, tables, charts, and exercises. It aims to provide a comprehensive education for the common people who did not have access to formal schooling. It also encourages them to think critically and independently about their social conditions and to strive for improvement and progress.

Vasa Pelagic's Narodni Ucitelj is a remarkable work of popular education and enlightenment. It reflects his vision of a democratic, egalitarian, and modern society, based on science, reason, and humanism.
