Radio: A Movie Review

Radio is a 2003 American semi-biographical sports drama film directed by Mike Tollin, and inspired by the 1996 Sports Illustrated article "Someone to Lean On" by Gary Smith. The article and the movie are based on the true story of T. L. Hanna High School football coach Harold Jones (Ed Harris) and a young man with an intellectual disability, James Robert "Radio" Kennedy (Cuba Gooding Jr.). The film co-stars Debra Winger and Alfre Woodard.

The movie follows the friendship and bond that develops between Coach Jones and Radio over the course of a football season in the 1970s. Radio, who lives alone with his mother and spends his days roaming the town with a shopping cart, is often harassed and bullied by some of the locals. Coach Jones takes him under his wing and gives him a role on the football team, as well as involving him in other school activities. Radio becomes a source of inspiration and joy for the team and the community, but also faces resistance and prejudice from some of the parents and officials who see him as a distraction and a liability.

The movie is a heartwarming and uplifting tale of compassion, acceptance, and dignity. Cuba Gooding Jr. delivers a remarkable performance as Radio, capturing his innocence, enthusiasm, and vulnerability. Ed Harris is equally impressive as Coach Jones, portraying him as a man of integrity, courage, and kindness. The supporting cast also does a great job of bringing the story to life, especially Alfre Woodard as the principled principal and S. Epatha Merkerson as Radio's loving mother.

Radio is not only a movie about football, but also about human values and relationships. It shows how one person can make a difference in the lives of others, and how others can learn from him. It also shows how overcoming challenges and obstacles can lead to growth and happiness. Radio is a movie that will touch your heart and make you smile.

If you are interested in watching Radio, you can find it on various streaming platforms or buy it on DVD or Blu-ray. You can also check out the original Sports Illustrated article that inspired the movie, or visit the IMDb page for more information.
